Kernal Roberts now in a Soca State of Mind and heeds the call to take the forefront
October 22, 2014 - Well known to the Soca world as one of the best producers and song writers, Kernal Roberts is about to step out from the wings and onto the stage. The son of the late Lord Kitchener, Roberts, is set to release a brand new track for Carnival 2015 that he not only penned and produced, but also laid the main vocals for.
The song was originally intended for another artist, but intentions changed while voicing the lyrics at Rama Studios. “Everybody in the studio was cheering me on to sing this one for myself,” says Roberts. “My voice was meshing with the music and it was like an immediate calling. I felt like it was my time to carry on my father’s legacy on the stage.”
Roberts has spent the last few years as the musical director and drummer for Machel Montano’s HD band. He has penned many of Trinidad and Tobago’s biggest hits and coveted Road March titles such as, “Pump Yuh Flag”, “Advantage”, “Band of the Year”, “Palance”, “Haunted”, “It’s Carnival”, “Bad Habits” and more. On occasion, Roberts has ventured into featuring his vocals on tracks alongside artists like Destra ("Boodie") and Benjai ("Oh Lawd Oh"), so ‘Young Kitch’ is not new to the singing game.
For 2015 Kernal Roberts releases his own track entitled, “Soca State Of Mind” which is set to hit the radio waves later today.
