EXPOSED Celebrates the United Nation's International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
- March 21, 2014 - Nia Centre for the Arts presents the closing reception ofEXPOSED 2014: Deciding Centre today at 918 Bathurst Centre to celebrate the work of nine talented Toronto-based artists, while honouring the United Nation’s International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
EXPOSED: Deciding Centre opened its doors with a successful opening launch on March 7th, and was noted as a “Must See” show by NOW Magazine. This annual visual arts exhibition promotes and showcases visual art by African-Canadian artists, which include multi-media, photography, paintings, drawings and textile- based work. Sandra Brewster, the exhibit curator highlights “Deciding Centre” as the overarching theme that summaries the exhibit.
“After all artists gathered together and discussed the similarities found in each other’s work, studio practice, and inspirations, we discovered a common concern and preoccupation with finding that place in which everything works, flows, comes together and balances- that centre, ” explains Brewster.
The exhibit’s title symbolizes the experience of this collective in producing EXPOSED 2014, and shed’s light on the growing practice of these contemporary artists as they explore their craft and discover their potential.
“At a time in our world where ethnicity and race still negatively impact one’s life chances, its refreshing and critically important that African Canadian artists urge us to see beyond their race, and reimagine our world along the lines the United Nations boldly envision," remarks Mark Campbell, Executive Director at Nia Centre for the Arts.
Special Guest, Ontario Fairness Commissioner Hon. Jean Augustine will be in attendance to celebrate the work of this collective, and commemorate the efforts demonstrated by world citizens to eliminate racial discrimination and promote diversity.
The Closing Reception starts at 6p.m. at 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Entertainment and Education. For tickets or more information visit
