Tessanne Chin to perform in Toronto

The winner of Season 5 of NBC’s The Voice will be in the city March 29 to receive an award and back again May 17 for a concert at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts with her Bread & Butter Band.

First up, Chin will be honoured at the University of the West Indies Fifth Annual Toronto Benefit Gala at the Ritz Carlton hotel on March 29, where she will be given a Luminary Award alongside her long-time mentor, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff.

The emcee of the night also happens to be Chin’s father-in-law, Michael Anthony Cuffe Sr., a Jamaican broadcaster.

Toronto’s large Jamaican community has been a big booster of Chin, who was a member of Team Adam Levine.

The patron of the gala is Raymond Chang, former Ryerson University chancellor and philanthropist, who like Chin is of Chinese-Jamaican descent.

Chin has opened for major acts such as Patti LaBelle, Peabo Bryson and Gladys Knight. Dancehall star Shaggy, another friend, was the one who pushed her into applying forThe Voice.

Tickets for the Sony Centre show range from $30 to $85. Tickets for the UWI gala range from $350 to $2,000
